History of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Along the northern boundary
of North Dakota, about midway between the east and west boundaries, lies
the region known as the Turtle Mountains. It occupies part of Rolette
and Bottineau counties and extends into Canada. … [page 85] This
tract of land would cover the same territory that Rolette County now
occupies with the exception of the eastern tier of townships. On March
1, 1883, Congress appropriated the sum of ten thousand dollars for the
purpose of aiding these Indians to make a permanent settlement upon
lands improved by individual Indians or upon lands to be allotted to
them. [page 113] This trouble [Jan 1889] was caused by the Rolette
county officers trying to compel the Indians and half-breeds to pay
taxes on cattle issued to them by the government, but not the property
of the Indians. … [pages 125-127] Rolette county, between the ninth
and tenth guide meridians [page 179] In the northern part of the
state a new county, Towner, was established [1883?] out of territory
from Rolette and Cavalier counties. From Rolette county were taken its
two eastern rows of townships … Rolette county was now bounded on the
north by the international boundary, on the west by the tenth guide
meridian, on the south by the fourteenth standard parallel, and on the
east by the line between ranges 68 and 69. [page 199] The new
counties, Pierce and Church, were created. … included … ten townships
from the southern part of Rolette county, … [page 219]

Genealogy or History of the Rowlett Family "
Rolette, North Dakota. Named for an Indian named Joe Rolette, either Sioux
or Chippewa, the town location was purchased 8/10/1905 and the county is
also Rolette. Joe Rolette disappeared several years ago and on one knows
what became of him. Families bearing the name reside there, but while
related to this Indian, they are no longer full blooded Indians."
A History of Rolla, North Dakota 1888-1988 - includes large section
(about 300 pages) of Rolla family histories. The book does not have an every
name index, but family histories are arranged alphabetically.
A History of Rolette County, North Dakota - published in 1953, it gives
the history of all the towns and townships in Rolette County as well as
sections on churches, cemeteries, schools, post offices, newspapers,
railroads and many others. Includes an index.
An alumni directory published in 1988 listing all the students and
